Matty Healy Seemingly Called Out Theories Over Taylor Swift’s “Guilty As Sin?”
It sure looks like Matty Healy reacted to some of the Swifties’ latest comments about him.
The root of this particular discourse comes from Taylor Swift’s song “Guilty as Sin?” from The Tortured Poets Department, which is widely believed to be about Matty. It opens with the lyrics “Drownin’ in the Blue Nile / He sent me ‘Downtown Lights,'” a reference to the song by The Blue Nile — a band Matty has previously said is his favorite.
Then, a week ago, Matty shared the Annie Lennox cover of “Downtown Lights” onto his Instagram story, writing, “If you don’t know this cover, you are welcome.” Naturally, this reignited the whole discourse.
Then, this weekend, the X account @Gooodmorninguys weighed in on the song again. It’s worth noting that this appears to be Matty’s personal account, as it goes by his alias Truman Black and is followed by Charli XCX and numerous others from the music industry.

“I think I sent my last Uber driver ‘The Downtown Lights’. He didn’t think it was ‘coded’. He is employed tho,” the account wrote.

It also reposted a tweet that shared a screengrab of a comment on a TikTok mashup of The 1975 song “Nothing Revealed / Everything Denied” with Taylor’s “Down Bad” captioned, “Matty Healy is so fucking messy. You don’t have a casual liaison with Pluto-Venus synastry.” The ensuing comment from an account called Matthewhealy22 read, “So close!!! That is mental illness!! ❤️ ❤️🙏.”
Matty has previously alluded to his relationship with Taylor in a recent interview where he said of writing new music, “Last year I became a way more well-known public figure for loads of different reasons…Honestly, I would kind of just be lying if I made a record about, I don’t know, all the stuff that was said about me or my casual romantic liaisons — or whatever it may be that I’ve kind of become known for just because I was famous.”
What do you make of this whole thing?
