Dwayne Johnson calls Maui’s new son in ‘Moana 2’ vocally ‘challenging’
Dwayne Johnson has revealed that his Moana 2 son has been vocally challenging.
The actor, who plays the role of Maui in the film, performed talked about his new anthem Can I Get a Chee-Hoo?
According to Entertainment Tonight, Johnson shared that the track, which marks Maui’s shift on encouragement rather than self-praise, was one of his most challenging musical moments.
“‘You’re Welcome’ is about how self-absorbed Maui is. ‘You’re welcome for everything that I do in this world’,” Johnson says referring to the song Maui sings in first Moana.
However, he added, “But I love the evolution and this idea that it’s not about him; it’s about empowering somebody else.”
Johnson admitted that performing the song wasn’t easy for him, revealing, “Abigail and Emily came in with something that was very challenging and I loved it. That was multiple sessions to get that song down because it goes into a lot of different places. Their words, not mine, it’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and all the places that it goes. So it was a challenge, but I loved every second of it.”
“I got bars. I grew up loving hip-hop music. My love is hip-hop music and traditional country — put them together. That’s how I grew up,” he added.
Since Moana 2 is now in theaters, Johnson joked that fans might have a new catchphrase for him, saying, “It has that potential as an anthemic song.”
