But, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit three years later, the former couple found themselves under the same roof again as they began quarantining with their children, Ella and Quinlin.
As the story goes, the unexpected living situation wound up bringing the exes closer again, and in 2022, Ben revealed that he and Christine got back together during the pandemic.
Now, in a new interview with the New York Times, Ben has opened up about his and Christine’s unconventional marriage journey — and why the time apart wound up making them stronger.
Admitting there was never a time that he “didn’t want [them] to be together,” Ben said that being “all together in the same house” during the pandemic was the key to reigniting their romance and ensuring their renewed bond was better than ever.
“I think not that many people do come back together when they separate,” he said. “There’s nothing like that, when you come back. You have so much more appreciation for what you have, because we know we could not have it.”
Giving some insight into the break in their marriage, Christine said they “always stayed a family unit” but had the space to learn more about themselves individually.
