From “dirty sodas” to the viral protein Diet Coke, it seems we’re in the era of eyebrow-raising “drink recipes” for our favorite fizzy beverages. I guess we’ve moved far away from the simple days of Diet Coke served over aesthetically pleasing spherical ice with a packet of crystallized lime juice.

The latest concoction that has the internet in an uproar comes from the one and only Dua Lipa. While in Austin for the ACL Music Festival, Dua uploaded a pretty…controversial Diet Coke recipe to TikTok. It now has over 9 million views and a lot of confused commenters.

If you haven’t seen this viral drink making the rounds, let me break it down for you. First, Dua pours a can of Diet Coke into a cup of ice. It’s crispy, it’s cold, all is well so far.

Unfortunately, at this point, chaos ensues. After pouring the Diet Coke, Dua proceeds to add pickle juice from a deli container of sliced pickles. “Then a couple pickles from my hand,” she jokes as she spills some of the pickles.

She doesn’t stop there, though. Next up is what she calls “jalapeño sauce,” which I’m guessing is the brine from a jar of pickled jalapeños. She also adds a few jalapeños for garnish, of course.

After joking that everyone is “staring” (I would too if I saw Dua Lipa adding pickle juice and “jalapeño sauce” to a cup of Diet Coke in a random restaurant), she gives the drink a “little mix-up” and takes a sip.

She then lets her friends try, and let’s just say there were some mixed reactions.

Along with some genuine concern in her comments.

She even got a coveted Gordon Ramsay reaction after the celebrity chef tried it out himself in another viral video. As a shock to literally no one, he spits it out and yells, “Dua Lipa, for god’s sake, girl! You’ll ruin your vocal cords!”

On Twitter, though, some people bravely admitted that they “see the vision” and are fully on board with pickle and jalapeño Diet Coke.

And a few reminded us that Dua Lipa is no stranger to telling the world about her slightly controversial food combos. You might remember her recommendation in an interview last year to eat vanilla ice cream with olive oil and salt.

But, hey, people loved the olive oil ice cream, so why not give her spicy, pickle-y bev a shot?

So, as a self-proclaimed Diet Coke connoisseur and a huge fan of bizarre Dua Lipa food moments (never forget ShrimpGate), I felt it was my duty to put this new creation to the test. Normally, I’m very much just a squeeze of lime in my afternoon Diet Coke kind of gal, so consider me skeptical, but a small part of me thought that the sweet-salty-spicy vibe could work. I mean, why else would the Chamoy Pickle Kit have such loyal followers?

Here was my very minimal ingredient list:

Now, onto the oh-so-complicated step-by-step. First, pour your Diet Coke over a cup of ice. Bonus points if you use a fun glass.

Next, add your pickle and jalapeño “sauces.” At first, dill pickles seemed like a weird choice, but I gave these a taste beforehand, and the dill flavor was pretty mild, as evidenced by the fact that there was no dill or other seasonings in the jar. The jalapeños, on the other hand, included pieces of garlic and onion. A few got into the glass, but it wasn’t the end of the world. I think it’s what Dua would’ve wanted.

Once all the ingredients are in the class, give everything a good stir — preferably a bit more than Dua’s slight shake of her glass — and garnish with pickles and jalapeños. Since my pickles weren’t sliced, I opted for the classy pickle wedge on the rim.

Now, for the moment of truth…

I hate to say this, but it wasn’t bad! I’ll even proudly declare that I actually liked it once I got past the jarring first sip. Will it be my new go-to 2 p.m. Wednesday pick-me-up? Probably not, but I found the saltiness of the brine, the sweetness of the Diet Coke, and the slight spice of the jalapeños somehow just…worked? As a matter of fact, my biggest complaint was that it could’ve been spicier, but that’s on me (and Target’s misleading “HOT” label). I did start craving my OG Diet Coke after a few sips, though — the saltiness plus the aspartame taste started to get a little old. I couldn’t imagine drinking a whole cup.

Now, because I’m me, I couldn’t just stop there. After taking another look at Dua’s pickle container, I was afraid that dill pickles may not have been the most accurate choice, and the drink ended up being way more briney than spicy. I figured this wouldn’t be solved by adding more of the mild jalapeño juice, so for round two, I decided to go with sweet and spicy pickles instead.

Apparently, I’ve been sleeping on sweet and spicy pickles all my life because these are ridiculously good. Like, I’m currently snacking on them as I write this. The brine contained bell peppers, jalapeños, red pepper flakes, and more sugar than the dill pickles, so there was a slight kick and a bit of sweetness without being too overwhelming.

We probably all have the drink-making process down at this point, so I’ll cut to the chase (and cute pickle garnish): These pickles definitely added that little something to the second drink that the first drink was missing, as the spicy sweetness combination worked out a little bit better.

But, oh, did you think we were done? Absolutely not. Now that my pickle test was complete, what better way to get through an afternoon slump than to follow several BuzzFeed commenters’ requests to make this into a tried-and-true cocktail?

I hear ya, and I’ve reported for duty. Three shots of vodka might be a little too reminiscent of my college days, but I figured one shot of tequila couldn’t hurt. So, sticking with those sweet and spicy pickles, that’s exactly what I did.

Sure, vodka could work, but spice plus tequila is the perfect combo in my eyes. Plus, the salty Coke somewhat reminds me of a batagna, a Mexican cocktail with tequila, Coke, lime juice, and a salt rim. Once again, I won’t take you through the process — just mix everything together, give it a lil’ pickle garnish, and you’re golden.

I’m baffled — this was so good. The tequila balances this “weird-tasting drink” incredibly well, especially with those spicy pickles. Think of it like a spicy margarita with a salt rim, but sweeter. The tequila I used had some light citrus notes, so I ended up adding a squeeze of lime and a couple of spicy bitters to take things up a notch, and they sure did. I do still stand by the fact that a Mexican Coke would make this even better, but I bought a 10-pack of mini Diet Coke, so here we are.

For the record, I also tried this with bourbon and the original dill pickles to make a pickleback of sorts. I’m generally not a bourbon/whisky gal, but because the other flavors were so strong, I actually ended up really enjoying this combo, too. Still, nothing will beat the spicy tequila for me.

So, there you have it! You can officially count me in as a Spicy Pickle Diet Coke fan, and I’ll see ya the next time Dua Lipa comes out with a bizarre food/drink combo!

Let me know in the comments if I’ve officially convinced you to try this controversial Diet Coke recipe!
