Over the past few months, while promoting her new Netflix movie, The Electric State, Millie Bobby Brown faced a ton of awful commentary about her appearance — with many unkindly suggesting that her hair, makeup, and styling made her look like she was aging “badly.”
At just 21 years old, Millie has already been a big name in Hollywood for over a decade after shooting to fame in Stranger Things as a child. And while she’s certainly no stranger to public scrutiny — particularly when it comes to her voice and looks — the recent discussions about her appearance became so cruel and widespread that she was forced to speak out.
“I think it’s necessary to speak up about this. I started in this industry when I was 10 years old. I grew up in front of the world, and for some reason, people can’t seem to grow with me,” she said in a lengthy Instagram video posted on March 4. “Instead, they act like I’m supposed to stay frozen in time, like I should still look the way I did on Stranger Things Season 1. And because I don’t, I’m now a target.”
Making a clear statement, Millie directly called out a number of rude tabloid articles about her looks — and even name-checked the reporters who wrote them. “This isn’t journalism. This is bullying,” she said. “The fact that adult writers are spending their time dissecting my face, my body, my choices, it’s disturbing. The fact that some of these articles are written by women? Even worse. We always talk about supporting and uplifting young women, but when the time comes, it seems easier to tear them down for clicks.”
Her video went suuuuper viral, and she was rightfully met with a ton of praise for speaking out. Since then, the Stranger Things star has continued to embrace her beauty — regardless of what the haters might think. And now, I’m obsessed with her latest transformation.
Sitting courtside at the Miami Open on Thursday alongside her husband Jake Bongiovi, and her father-in-law, Jon Bon Jovi (no big deal), Millie unveiled new dark brown locks.
Ditching the blonde tresses in favor of her darker roots, Millie styled her new brunette hair in a sleek updo with a fun red clip, matching her red-striped outfit and cute tinted sunglasses.
Talking about nailing court-side style. I love this! On behalf of brown-haired girlies everywhere: Welcome back to the club, Millie.
Whoever said blondes have more fun?! Not in the world I’m living in, at least. I can only wonder if Millie’s new look is here to stay. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
