Lauren Sánchez, Gayle King, producer Kerianne Flynn, and scientists Aisha Bowe and Amanda Nguyễn were also aboard the spacecraft for the 11-minute trip.

After returning safely, Katy notably claimed that the controversial trip was for “the benefit of the Earth.” She said, “It’s about a collective energy and making space for future women. It’s about this wonderful world that we see right out there and appreciating it. This is all for the benefit of Earth.”

As you can probably imagine, tons of people have criticized the mission — including celebrities like Emily Ratajkowski, who specifically called out how destructive it was.

Emily said in a TikTok video this week, “That space mission this morning? That’s end-time shit. Like, this is beyond parody. Saying that you care about Mother Earth and it’s about Mother Earth, and you’re going up in a spaceship that is built and paid for by a company that’s singlehandedly destroying the planet? Look at the state of the world and think about how many resources went into putting these women into space… For what? What was the marketing there?”

Well, the backlash has only continued to grow after fans uncovered old footage of Katy actually advocating against “man-made climate change.”

The video in question was released in 2015, with Katy actually representing UNICEF as an ambassador. She said, “Let’s take a journey and see how man-made climate change is hurting children around the world.”

“Over the Pacific in the Philippines, we’ve seen more devastating tropical cyclone patterns emerging, while further west in Bangladesh, millions of children and families have lost their homes to flooding. Because it’s always children who are first to suffer from its impact,” she continued.

After citing more examples of the devastating impacts of climate change, Katy warned people that “things will worsen.” She then urged, “Please join me in supporting UNICEF to change the forecast for children. Fight unfair.”

Reacting to the resurfaced clip now, several people have called Katy a “hypocrite” given her recent defense of the space mission. “Celebrities are walking oxymorons,” one person said, while someone else wrote, “The biggest hypocrite.”

“The hypocrisy is astounding,” another user echoed.

“Katy Perry 2015: Lectures us icky regular people on Global Man-Made Climate Change. Katy Perry 2025: Takes an 11-minute space tourism joy ride that probably produced more carbon than I have in my entire lifetime,” someone tweeted.

Another post, when translated, reads: “Katy Perry flew 11 minutes into space on a rocket to experience 4 minutes of weightlessness. By the way, she is an official UNICEF ambassador against ‘man-made climate change.’ You just have to be able to afford double standards.”

Yikes. Let me know what you think in the comments.
