After Years Of Shooting At Actual Formula 1 Races, The Full “F1” Movie Trailer Just Dropped — And The Behind-The-Scenes Details Will Blow Your Mind

Brad Pitt driving an actual race car around an actual Formula 1 track with actual Formula 1 drivers? You have my attention!!!!!

As any Formula 1 fan will be well aware, the 2025 season is about to get underway in Australia. However, the real-life action isn’t all that motorsport fans have to look forward to this year…

As you may have already heard, Formula 1 and its 10 teams have collaborated with Apple for a huuuuge movie, conveniently titled F1.

Specific plot details have been kept under wraps, but as far as we know, the film stars Brad Pitt as Sonny Hayes, a veteran Formula 1 driver who comes out of retirement to race for the team APXGP (pronounced apex). As you may or may not know, all Formula 1 teams have two drivers, so driving alongside Sonny is a fresh-faced rookie named Joshua Pearce, played by the British actor Damson Idris.

And while APXGP, Sonny, and Joshua may be entirely fictional, a lot about this film is very, very real — including half of the cast, which is made up of real-life Formula 1 drivers playing themselves. Yep, thanks to a helping hand from none other than seven-time world champion Sir Lewis Hamilton, who serves as an executive producer on the film, the F1 movie team was granted unprecedented access to shoot at actual Formula 1 races, on actual iconic Formula 1 tracks, alongside actual Formula 1 drivers — in real racing cars made by an actual Formula 1 team.

So, if you’ve seen all the pictures of Brad hanging around at Formula 1 races — this is why!

If that somehow hasn’t excited you, now might be a good time to mention that the movie is directed by Joseph Kosinski — the man who gave us Top Gun: Maverick in 2022. Needless to say, Joseph knows a thing or two about directing some mind-blowing action scenes, and now, we have a new taste of what to expect when F1 hits theaters on June 27.

Following on from a couple of short teaser videos released in the past few months, the full-length trailer dropped today, giving a fiery first look at the teammate rivalry between Sonny and Joshua as they come to blows both on and off the track.

We also learn more about Sonny’s history — and his elusive reputation as a washed-up “gambling junkie who missed his shot” — thanks to a dramatic voiceover by Academy Award winner Javier Bardem, who appears to be playing APXGP’s team boss.

We’ve got wheel-to-wheel action, cars in flames, and a dramatic rendition of “The Chain” by Fleetwood Mac — which famously used to be the theme music for Formula 1 coverage in the UK. And with all that, I’ve failed to mention that we’re also introduced to Kerry Condon’s character, who, as well as being an APXGP race engineer, seems to be Sonny’s love interest…

Well, this trailer seems to have everything. So, if one thing is quickly becoming clear, it’s that you certainly don’t need to be a Formula 1 expert to have the time of your life watching this movie. In fact, while speaking at a press conference this week, Joseph Kosinski revealed that he only became interested in Formula 1 a few years ago. “I found that it’s an incredibly unique sport in that your teammate is also your, in many ways, your greatest competition,” he said. “And for me, that makes for a great drama.”

Joseph quickly saw scope for a great movie; one thing led to another, and he soon found himself on the phone with Lewis Hamilton, who he asked to be his “partner” on the project. “Having Lewis gave me this incredible in into this world,” Joseph said, adding that the Ferrari driver was “instrumental in not only the technical aspects, but in formulating this narrative.”

Notably, Joseph said it was Lewis’s former boss, Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team CEO Toto Wolff, who suggested they build real race cars. “We actually bought six [Formula 2] cars, real F2 race cars, and worked with Mercedes AMG and their engineers to build real race cars that could carry our camera equipment recorders and transmitters for making this film,” Joseph said. “So every time you see Brad or Damson driving in this movie, they’re driving on their own in one of these real race cars on a real F1 track.”

Filming began at the British Grand Prix waaaay back in 2023, and it apparently required months of intense training before that to make sure Brad and Damson were equipped to drive the race cars like pros. “If Brad can’t drive, this whole film wasn’t going to work,” Joseph said, recalling early days at the tracks with Lewis and Brad. “And what Lewis was very happy to discover was that Brad had a lot of just natural ability right from the start.”

“He just had that natural feel for grip in the car, and what we’re doing on this film is dangerous,” he continued. “So yeah, you have to be fearless, and when you see Brad driving, that’s not acting. He’s really concentrating on keeping that car on the track and out of the wall during all those scenes. So, that’s something that you just can’t fake.”

As someone who went to a Formula 1 race last year and witnessed the real Brad Pitt driving around the track with my own eyes, I can attest to this being true. And I, for one, cannot WAIT to see F1 on the big screen on June 27.
