In a recent interview with Gay Times, Ariana claimed that Glinda — or, at least, her version of the character — “might be a little in the closet,” and that “you never know” what might have happened between the two characters if they had “a little more time” together.

“It is just a true love, and I think that transcends sexuality,” she said in the interview. “It’s just a deep safety within each other.”

“And trust and truth and just such a safe space for one another, which is what all relationships should be — whether it’s romantic or platonic.”

And Cynthia Erivo didn’t seem to disagree with Ariana’s assertion. “She goes wherever the wind blows,” she said of Elphaba in the interview. “I think she loves Glinda. I think she loves love.”

“It is true love, which is probably why people are shipping it. Because what they build with each other is an unbreakable bond and love.”

Ariana also pointed out that the word “queer” is frequently used in the original Oz-verse (can we call it that?) book series from L. Frank Baum.

“Oz is just a celebration of uniqueness,” she said. “And everyone is so beautiful in Oz, and I don’t think it even is a conscious decision. Everyone is just so beautifully queer.”
