While tons of celebrities usually make gushing remarks about the Met Gala, some haven’t been afraid to criticize Anna Wintour’s highly-coveted fashion event for various reasons. With the 2025 ball around the corner, here’s a look back at some of the most unfiltered comments and admissions made by celebs:

Kourtney, who attended the Met for the first and only time in 2022, laughed as she told a reporter on the carpet that she “honestly didn’t really think” about the theme — which is a really big deal, of course.

Let’s chat about all things Met Gala

More recently, Naomi admitted that she never follows the event’s theme, and wasn’t even sure what last year’s was while she was literally on her way to the ball.

JFK’s grandson recently announced that he’s boycotting the 2025 Met because “it’s not the time for a party like that.” He said, “Hey Anna Wintour! I am boycotting the Met Gala this year. With so much happening at home and around the world, it’s not the time, it’s not the time for a party like that—at least for me. So I am boycotting the Met Gala this year. I will not be going to the Met Gala. Thank you all so much.”

Amy said that attending the 2016 Met “felt like a punishment,” telling Howard Stern: “I left earlier than I should’ve been allowed…I don’t like the farce…We’re dressed up like a bunch of fucking assholes.”

Tina described the event as a “jerk parade” after attending for the first and only time in 2010. “If you had a million arms and all the people you would punch in the whole world, they’re all there,” she said.

Two years after attending the 2016 Met, Demi memorably described the event as “cliquey” and “uncomfortable” during a chat with Billboard. “I had a terrible experience. This one celebrity was a complete bitch and was miserable to be around. It was very cliquey. I remember being so uncomfortable that I wanted to drink,” she shared.

Gwyneth called the Met “un-fun” back in 2013, telling USA Today, “I’m never going again. It was so un-fun. It was boiling. It was too crowded. I did not enjoy it at all.”

After attending the 2022 Met, Lizzo admitted during an Instagram Live that things weren’t quite as glamorous as she’d hoped. “There’s a long fucking line. I’m taking the glamour away from it, but it’s true. You’ve gotta wait. So you’re waiting and that’s the hardest part. I was sweating in a big-ass coat, my feet were hurting,” she said, before later adding: “They were being really stingy with the liquor that night. He was like, ‘Red or white wine?’ And I was like, ‘Tequila! Do you know what I’ve been through? Do you know how many hours I’ve been in this corset? How long I’ve been in these damn shoes? Tequila!’”

Zayn famously shared his dislike for the Met after attending with his now-ex-partner Gigi Hadid. He told GQ, “I’d rather be sitting at my house, doing something productive, than dressing up in really expensive clothes and being photographed on a red carpet.… To do the self-indulgent, ‘Look at me, I’m amazing’ thing on the red carpet, it’s not me.”

Finally, model Quannah Chasinghorse described the Met as “such a weird space to be in” back in 2021. “I remember standing there and looking at everyone and feeling so alone. Like, really, really lonely. … No one knew me. No one cared to ask. People are there for themselves and it shows,” she shared.
