How Daily Paper’s Founders Are Honouring Their African Heritage With Their New Football Kits

In a new collaboration with PUMA, Abderrahmane Trabsini and Jefferson Osei – co-founders of the Amsterdam-based fashion brand Daily Paper – are paying homage to their African roots through the football kit designs, ahead of the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON). With a deeply personal approach, both designers have crafted uniforms that highlight the essence of Morocco and Ghana, and serve to celebrate and connect people across continents through their shared cultural heritage.

For Abderrahmane, who designed Morocco’s kit, the project was a rare opportunity to honour his heritage on a global stage. “I think for me, it’s a sense of pride,” he said, explaining that this design has been one of the most meaningful experiences of his career. The home kit incorporates the traditional Zellige tilework, while the away kit features Amazigh (Berber) rug patterns and the rarely represented Amazigh language. With these symbols, Abderrahmane wanted to pay tribute to Morocco’s Indigenous Amazigh people and heritage. “The indigenous language was never acknowledged,” he shared. “And now it is. I really wanted to show with the away jerseys that it’s there as well. It’s a rich culture, and I’m happy that we finally have it official in our country.”

“It’s about more than a jersey,” he says. “It’s about telling a story that represents the Moroccan diaspora and the values we hold close, especially for Moroccans living in Europe. I wanted Moroccans everywhere to see this kit and feel that connection.”

Meanwhile, Jefferson Osei put his own heritage centrestage when he designed Ghana’s kit. For Jefferson, honouring his homeland’s vibrant and multicultural identity was essential. He used elements of kente cloth patterns and Adinkra symbols – ancient Ghanaian emblems that represent values such as strength, unity, and harmony. “These kits are more than just football attire; they’re about belonging,” Jefferson shared. “Ghana has such a rich history, and I wanted the design to reflect that for Ghanaians everywhere, whether they’re at home or part of the diaspora.”  He emphasised how he saw these symbols as a unifying force for Ghanaians, especially during challenging political times. “People really see football as a tool to unite in Ghana, so I felt like with Adinkra symbols, you can bring everybody together; all the people from all the different demographics, all the different tribes.”

Through Daily Paper, both Abderrahmane and Jefferson have long celebrated the fusion of their African heritage with Western influences, which has led them to build a bridge between traditional and contemporary aesthetics. With PUMA’s support, they extended this approach to the football kits, giving each design a distinct personality that reflects the country’s unique, rich story. “Football is something that connects us all, especially in Africa. These kits are part of that unity. When a Ghanaian player wears this shirt, they carry a piece of our culture onto the field,” Jefferson said. Both designers hope the kits will resonate with young Africans worldwide, inspiring pride in their heritage, and creating a legacy that both honours heritage and inspires a sense of unity across the diaspora.
