I’ve Been Watching “Grey’s Anatomy” For The First Time, And Here’s Every Storyline That’s Pissed Me Off So Far

I have so much hate in my heart, and it’s all reserved for Owen Hunt.

I never thought there’d actually be a day when I would watch Grey’s Anatomy. For my preferences, the show always seemed to have too many depressing storylines, too many graphic surgeries, and waaaaaay too many seasons. But last fall, after rewatching Desperate Housewives, I needed another show with a lot of seasons to come home to every night. And so, I bit the bullet and started Grey’s, and I haven’t looked back! As much as I’m loving the show, naturally, there have been a handful of storylines that I absolutely loathe. So here are the storylines from the first 13 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy that really grinded my gears.

Five characters in medical scrubs and lab coats stand in a hospital corridor, appearing engaged in conversation

ABC

1. Every single time Cristina and Owen got back together after he accused her of “killing” their baby.

Two people in an emotional argument in a kitchen, with text expressing a tense and hurtful exchange about a past situation

ABC

I could make a whole post about my hate for Owen alone, but it all starts here. I actually liked him up until this storyline, but after this, his character could never be redeemed for me. Then he made things a million times worse when he cheated on Cristina to “punish” her for the abortion. Every single time they broke up after that, I cheered…and every single time they got back together, I seethed.

2. Mark Sloan discovering he had a daughter.

Sloan Riley introducing herself to mark

ABC

In general, I hate the TV trope of childless people finding out they have children they never knew about. I hated this one, especially because I love Mark and Lexie as a couple, and Sloan Riley was the beginning of the end of them.

3. Burke leaving Cristina at the altar.

ABC

I could sense that their relationship was coming to a natural end, but the way he left Cristina was just SO out of character. That’s what bugged me about the whole breakup. IMO, nothing that we saw of Burke during the first three seasons would suggest that he’s the type of guy to leave his fiancé at the altar, pack up his things, and move away without telling her. It was off-brand for him and it was abrupt.

4. Izzie leaving Alex while they were newlyweds.

ABC

Similar to Burke’s exit, Izzie’s exit was abrupt and out of character. It angered me because she JUST got married to Alex when she left. It took them SO long to get together, and then in the blink of an eye, she just up and left him without having a conversation with him first. Plus, Izzie left the show in the middle of a really interesting storyline about her having cancer which just felt incomplete.

5. Callie getting pregnant with Mark’s baby.

ABC

Even though they had a great co-parenting system, the pregnancy initially complicated things with Arizona and Callie and it was the nail in the coffin for Lexie and Mark, (and and as established before, I looooove Mark and Lexie).

6. Callie and George’s whole relationship.

Two people in hospital scrubs, walking in a hallway, engaged in conversation

ABC

From the moment Callie pursued George, I didn’t buy it. I didn’t see the chemistry, and it was even more mind-boggling to me that she was actually falling extremely hard for him. Callie was such a badass but she was down bad for GEORGE? Make it make sense.

7. Izzie and George getting together.

Two people in hospital scrubs smile in a medical setting. One wears a white coat over the scrubs

ABC

My issue is not even that he was cheating on Callie. My issue was that I loved George and Izzie’s friendship so much, and this just made it weird. Their chemistry never gave friends-to-lovers, so I could not buy them as a couple. However, I did live for all the drama it caused in George’s marriage because, like I said before, I hated his relationship with Callie.

8. Lexie dying before she and Mark could get back together.

Two characters are lying on the ground, wounded. One asks for a message to be relayed about love; the other confesses deep feelings and future plans

ABC

Have I mentioned that I love Mark and Lexie yet? So yeah, I was wrecked when she died. Especially since a few episodes prior, she confessed her feelings to him, and he hadn’t reciprocated those feelings yet. Although them confessing their feelings to each other seconds before she died is one of my favorite scenes on the show, I’m still mad we didn’t get to see them living life as a couple again.

9. Everything about Amelia and Owen’s love story.

Two people standing in a crowd; the woman looks forward with a thoughtful expression, the man behind her shows mild concern

ABC

I hate Owen, and so any storyline about him I already kinda don’t care about. I’m also very annoyed by Amelia. She’s very indecisive, erratic, and dramatic. So two characters I hate dating and getting married and splitting up was just hard for me to care about at all.

10. Meredith and Derek getting married on Post-It note.

A framed blue post-it note with wedding vows and signatures written on it

ABC

Okay, I’m 1,000% being nitpicky about this one, but I just thought it was stupid and childish. It was two people over 30 playing house. Just go to city hall already 🙄.

11. Callie leaving Grey-Sloan Memorial, moving to New York to be with her girlfriend, and taking Sofia with her.

Two people conversing indoors, one facing the camera wearing a casual top, and the other with long hair visible from behind

ABC

This RUINED Callie’s character to me. Moving Sofia across the country and away from Arizona was just incredibly, unbelievably selfish. Callie uprooted her daughter’s life just so she could keep dating a woman she just started getting serious with. It was so wildly reckless of her.

12. The whole musical episode.

A person stands by a hospital bed, appearing distraught and shouting at someone lying down. They are wearing a black top and cardigan

ABC

This was just goofy. It made the whole plot about Callie fighting for her life so unserious. It didn’t help that I didn’t enjoy most of the covers either.

13. Erica Hahn’s employment at the Seattle Grace.

Two medical professionals in a hospital hallway, one in scrubs holding papers and the other in a lab coat, engaged in conversation

ABC

Ooooo, she pissed me OFF! The way she treated Cristina like crap and shamed her for “sleeping her way” to the top was infuriating, and I was relieved when she finally left.

14. And finally, Owen having a secret missing sister.

ABC

This came out of nowhere and at this point, I’m tired of the series of secret sisters Grey’s Anatomy pumps out. Maggie was my cap. It was odd that Hunt never mentioned having a sister up until season 13, which made it all the more apparent that the writers pulled this out of thin air for some drama.
