“Something happens when you continue to tell your story in spaces where you may feel uncomfortable. And something happens eventually where you begin to own it, and in owning your story, you’re owning yourself.”

Viola Davis is truly a generational talent, and she’s always been outspoken about the obstacles she’s overcome along her journey.

And when she sat down with us to talk about her latest film, G20, she dropped some much-needed words of wisdom.

Speaking to BuzzFeed UK, Viola opened up about how she’s come to be confident and comfortable in her own skin, saying, “Our purpose is not what you do: it’s what happens to people when you do what you do.”

She shared that her number one way of doing that was through honouring six-year-old Viola.

Viola told us that her younger self was mischievous and would cuss, but that she was also incredibly imaginative and creative. “Six-year-old Viola didn’t need to be healed – there was nothing wrong with her,” she said, “She grew up in poverty, she was all of those things, but there was nothing wrong with her.”

“Something happens when you continue to tell your story in spaces where you may feel uncomfortable,” Viola shared. “And something happens eventually where you begin to own it, and in owning your story, you’re owning yourself.”
