When a TV show “jumps the shark,” that basically means that the storylines are getting too far-fetched or ridiculous. For example, IMHO, Riverdale jumped the shark in Season 3 with the introduction of the cult storyline.

Typically, jumping the shark is considered a bad thing, but it doesn’t always have to be.

For example, when William Hartnell left the original run of Doctor Who after three seasons, script editor Gerry Davis and producer Innes Lloyd invented regeneration — the process by which Time Lords like The Doctor can cheat death through a complete biological renewal. Regeneration has become one of the biggest hallmarks of the show, allowing the Doctor to be recast over and over.

And in Ugly Betty, the introduction of Daniel Jr., Daniel Meade’s supposed secret son, in the Season 2 finale seemed ridiculous at first, but the storyline actually ended up being really emotional.

And on Jane the Virgin, Michael coming back to life in Season 4 revitalized the core love triangle between him, Jane, and Rafael — and made it so much more heartbreaking.
